The last few days have been repetitive, frustrating and demanding. Tougher than I ever could have imagined, and we haven’t even really started. As ever, being Michael’s mum, I’ve had to jump head first in to scary, unknown territory.
Praise means Progress – Week 2
Clarissa has explained I am everything to Mike and he will do anything for my attention. Our plan is to teach him, if he eats and communicates with me, then he gets Mummy. Just over a week in to the process and he is already torn at mealtimes, does he resort to old ways and eat nothing or do what Mum says and get her gushing with attention, all for him? The answer is eventually, always the latter! (However long that might take!) This is where we are working with Mike right now. Mike needs to learn that crying is for babies, communicating for toddlers: wish me luck…
Ready, Steady, Go! – Week 1
So I’d hoped to keep up day to day, with Mike’s feeding therapy, but we soon got started and in no time I was carried away in to a new world of behavioural psychology. As a family, it’s a new way of parenting our little boy, Mike.
Mike is cute, funny, cheeky, all the things you’d expect from a two year old; but has a very unique problem. He doesn’t know how to eat. For Mike it comes in two waves, he doesn’t feel hunger like most of us would and is extremely sensitive (or has sensory sensitivities). Most foodstuffs are too overwhelming, to the point he wretches, gags, vomits and closes his eyes. Things got so bad for Mike recently, that he was rapidly losing weight and was poorly. He needed to be nasogastric tube fed.
